Three Things That Can Delay a UK Pet Move
Wrong Route
Pets entering Great Britain must arrive via an officially approved route and airport. Not every airline, transit hub, or seasonal flight is authorized to check in pets.
Wrong Timing
Vietnam is an unlisted country. Pets need a rabies blood test at least 30 days after vaccination, followed by a mandatory 3-month waiting period before they can fly.
Wrong Document
The Great Britain pet health certificate must be endorsed by official government veterinarians in Vietnam and remains valid for entry for only 10 days from issuance.
What the UK Actually Requires
This page focuses on pets moving from Vietnam to Great Britain: England, Wales, and Scotland. Northern Ireland follows separate pet travel rules.
Cargo, Rabies & Tapeworm Rules
- Pet must be microchipped before or on the exact day of the rabies vaccination
- Rabies vaccination must be kept continuous and valid through the travel date
- Rabies blood titer test (≥0.5 IU/ml) is mandatory for Vietnam-origin dogs
- Blood sample must be drawn at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination
- Travel is legally permitted only after a strict 3-month waiting period from the successful blood-sample date
- Official Great Britain pet health certificate must be endorsed by the DAH within 10 days of arrival
- Tapeworm treatment (containing Praziquantel) must be administered by a vet 24–120 hours before scheduled UK arrival
- Dogs arriving by air must travel as manifested cargo, not in the cabin or as checked baggage
- Approved airline routes and UK Border Control Post (BCP) slots must be verified before booking

Pet Relocation FAQs
How early do we need to start?
We recommend starting at least 4 to 5 months before your target move date. Because Vietnam is an unlisted country, the required 30-day post-vaccine wait and the mandatory 3-month post-blood-draw waiting period mean the medical steps alone take 4 months.
Can my pet fly in the cabin to the UK?
No. For standard commercial airlines flying directly into Great Britain, UK law mandates that pets must travel as manifested cargo in the hold. The only exceptions are approved assistance/guide dogs and non-commercial private chartered flights.
Do dogs and cats follow the same UK rules?
They share almost identical core requirements: microchipping, rabies vaccines, a rabies blood titer test, a 3-month waiting period, a GB health certificate, and mandatory cargo transit. The only major difference is that dogs require a vet-administered tapeworm treatment right before travel.
Does my pet need quarantine in the UK?
A properly documented pet that completes its 3-month waiting period in Vietnam will not face quarantine upon arrival. Quarantine is only used as an enforcement measure if paperwork is missing, incorrect, or if the pet traveled on an unapproved route.
What is the tapeworm rule for dogs?
Dogs must be treated for tapeworm by a licensed vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before the scheduled time of arrival in Great Britain. The exact date, time, and manufacturer details must be written on the health certificate.
Is Northern Ireland the same as England, Wales, and Scotland?
No. This information applies strictly to Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales). Northern Ireland operates under separate rules aligned with EU pet regulations, requiring alternative routing considerations.
Why not book the flight first?
Booking the flight first often leads to costly cancellation fees. Airline cargo space cannot be secured until the pet's crate sizes are locked in, an approved route is verified, and the mandatory 3-month blood test waiting period has clear, finalized dates.
